This is a triptych of self-portraits aiming to capture different facets of my identity within my family. The roles of daughter, wife and mother each evoke a different range of emotions and sentiments.
Presently both my parents live in care homes with dementia and frailty. This situation evokes a range of poignant emotions such as sadness, grief, loss, helplessness, despair and disconnection which I represented in the first painting 'Daughter'.
Happily my emotions around my relationship with my husband are overwhelmingly positive. These include security, support, love, peace, contentment and tenderness. 'Wife' is simple and calm using a soft green colour.
Despite my daughters being adults, the role of nurturing and supporting them never ceases. The words that come to mind are warmth, caring, fun, playfulness, nurturing, joy and vitality. For 'Mother' I used copies of paintings my daughters had made when young to collage into the painting.
A Gentle Rain of Kindness, a triptych. Oil paint and collage on canvas board, each painting 40.6 x 30.4 cm (2023)
